 The journey of a bird

A physical transformation

The group’s attention was turned to those whose lives are determined by migration to explore the changes that occur on the journey and how one’s culture and ideology are carried in the body. Exploring especially the use of light, shadow and colour and vocal sound, an eerily beautiful environment encompasses the audience and performers.

Five wire torsos hang in a circle, each with a skirt brushing the ground. Sounds reminiscent of birds are made by unseen performers. A physical pattern emerges and sounds take the shape of language. A torch lights the journey of a bird - its shadow travels the room.

The piece was performed in Wales at the Magdelena Project conference ‘The Articulate Practitioner-Articulating Practice’ in July 2005.

Bachi continue to progress with the piece by employing a strategy for working at a distance from one another. The subject of migration is pertinent to Bachi, the individuals of the group, and in a globally political sense in this shrinking world. The long flight ahead refers to travel over geographical distances alongside metaphorical ones and is also a reflection on - and result of - this negotiation of separateness/distance (in space).
